25th January: Dydd Santes Dwynwen

The Welsh Valentine’s Day; Saint Dwynwen’s Day. Celebrating Dwynwen, the Welsh Patron Saint of Lovers is next weekend, Sunday the 25th of January.

Dwynwen, meaning ‘she who leads a blessed life’ was the prettiest of 24 daughters of Welsh king Brychan Brycheiniog.  She fell madly in love with a man named Maelon Dafodrill, but her father had already arranged for her to marry someone else.

Legend has it her true love was turned to a block of ice, and a distraught Dwynwen devoted her life to God; setting up a convent on the island of Llanddwyn, near Newborough. The remains of her convent and a ‘magical’ well are still there today.

Whilst no longer recognised by the Vatican as being an official Saint; ‘Santes Dwynwen’  is still very popular in Wales, and no place more so than here on Anglesey; her home county.

We still have a couple of cottages available for next weekend; so if you’d like to celebrate Santes Dwynwen Day on her home island, please do give us a call.
